flying home
"Okay. Right." you say "HOME. No problem. Here we go..."
Its one thing, fiddling a bit with the controls to see what they do. Its another to try to reverse the progress of an entire spaceship.
You find out two things pretty quickly: One- you are going fast. As you try to turn to put the moon behind you instead of in front of you, you find yourself turning through a much, much wider arc than you had expected. And two- the moon has gravity! And its pulling you in.
"Whoa geesh, what are you doing?" yelps Clarrise, as the ship develops a nasty shimmy, and you feel yourself being yanked sideways towards towards a nice crash landing on the moon. She shoulders you aside at the control panel, but she doesn't know what she is doing any more than you and you shove her back.
"No fighting no fighting! We have to work this together!" she shouts and you instantly see the sense in this.
It takes several frigtening minutes, but the two of you actually get the ship righted around, and making blazing fast progress back towards the earth. There is only a slight amount of residual shaking through the floors now.
"This isn't t-t-tooo b-bad. R-i-ight?"
"R-r-right! We're fi-ine!"
Before long the earth looms large in your sky again, and now you feel the its much more massive gravity take hold of your ship, sucking you in. Before you know it you hit the atmosphere and you realize that landing a spaceship is the like falling from the very very top of the sky! Its utterly terrifying.
"Aim for home!" your aunt shouts, as the ship gives a horrible twisting roll.
"Home coming right up!!" you shriek. Blue and white rush by you, as well as what looks like fire and smoke! There is another spin and a jerk and both of you go tumbling away from the control panels, the ship totally out of control.
There is a crashing, crushing impact, a tidal wave of steam and liquid water, a sizzling scorching sound. Then your ship is bobbing up and down on the waves of the Ocean.
You drift for a few days, eating the supplies in your back pack. You take turns trying to flying the ship, but either you don't know what you are doing or the ship has had one two many crash landings lately, because neither of you make any progress. You are just grateful that you happened to land in the water. A land impact would surely have killed you.
Then the ship washes up onto a beach. You try the yellow button, and do manage at least to open the exit hatch. You step out onto the cold sand thrilled to be alive. Behind you is only ocean, before you nothing but beach and trees.
"Where are we?" you wonder "Which way is home? How far will we have to walk, do you think?"
Clarisse makes no comment, but a couple of kangaroos hop out of the forest and bound down the beach.
