wolves page 150
Quietly as possible, keeping your eyes on them the whole time, you and Clarisse slowly get to your feet. The wolves don’t like that a bit. Low growls, then one or two sharp barks.
Did Clarisse move first, or did you, or was it the wolves? You don’t know. All you know is that suddenly you are screaming and running and the wolves are baying and snapping at your heels! You hurl yourself into a big pine with lots of low hanging branches. You’ve climbed trees your whole life and you fly up this one like a staircase. Fangs sink into your foot, and you lose a shoe. Clarisse loses her machete. Howling like you’ve never heard before! Up close and personal.
You are up in the thin branches when you remember to see if your foot is still attached. You’re unhurt and so is your aunt, but the brute that got your shoe savages it to shreds below.
You stay in the tree till morning comes.
As the sun rises the wolves slink away like goblins or vampires- only scarier.
You stay up there till well into the afternoon as well. Somehow neither of you feels much like coming down again.
Who knows how long you might have stayed up there but a little after lunch time, you hear someone tromping through the woods and calling out your names!
“Uncle Chase!” you shout.
Your uncle Chase is a burly, bearded man with a gun and boots. He stomps into view, looks up at you in your tree and has a laugh at your predicament.
“Did you two see that meteor last night!?” he exclaims “I was hunting a few miles south of here, decided to check it out. Found your campfire and your trail. What on earth are you guys doing up there?!”
He gives you a lift back home in his truck. You are both exhausted- your scavenging trip can wait. As for the meteor site:
“Not much to see when I got there” Chase says “A lot of burned grass in a clearing. Tire tracks too. No idea what that was all about.”
You take a little ribbing from some of your cousins about your adventure, but you are happy to be home and safe regardless. For the rest of your life however, you never feel quite at home around dogs.
