You’ve always had good reflexes, but as the branch whips past you a patch of rough gravel gives way underneath your feet and you are falling!
“Whoa!” you hear Clarisse exclaim, and you feel her hand slap out at you, grabbing your sleeve, but it’s too late! Before you know what’s happening you are crashing down a steep hillside, rebounding painfully off boulders and trees!
You strike the ground hard with Clarisse on top of you.
Far above you the stars twinkle brightly, through a fringe of black treetops. Everything hurts and you have almost completely lost your sense of direction.
After lying there a while, groaning and aching, you and your aunt check each other over for broken bones. Finding none, you consider your options. You are at the bottom of a steep ravine that somehow you completely failed to see in the dark. It’s sides are much too sheer consider climbing in the dark. In fact, the walls are so close together that before long in either direction they begin to lean together, becoming something more like a tunnel.
