Working for Manx

As part of Manx's team, you make a clean get away from the jamboree. You ride all night to put some distance between yourselves and the Rode Pie Rats. The next day Manx puts you to work.

Working for Manx turns out to be a much better deal than you would have guessed. You first learn about motorbikes; how to ride them, how to fix them, how to clean them (more of this last at first than seems necessary). You learn how to handle a few weapons- long knife, pistol, machete. But what you learn most about is people. You travel more in the next 6 months than you ever have before in your life, and everywhere you go you meet people. Manx seems to know somebody everywhere, and he has a keen eye and memory for details. He always seems to know what people need most and how to get it for them, making a clean profit for your crew along the way. He turns out to be more of a trader than a robber. On the rare occasion when a village doesn't need anything, he breaks out his preacher routine, because everybody needs entertainment. Only once or twice he does lead your crew in pure piracy-- both times against other pirates-- and even then he returns quite a bit of the loot to its original owners. On these occasions, the local villages welcome your crew as heroes, with feasts, music and celebrations.

Its at the second of these late night parties that a toothless old fellow sidles up to you and presses an old scrap of paper into your hand.

"This ought to interest you all, being pirates and all that." he says in the whisper of a man going deaf.

You glance over the paper and see that its an old map.

"To Eldorado!" explains the old man "City of Gold! Where they still have running water and the internet and toilets and everything! Automobiles and Youtube for everyone! And the streets are paved with electricity!"

"Let me see that" Manx says, sitting down between the two of you. He takes the map in his mismatched hands and holds it up to the fire light "Huh. Eldorado, eh? Say kid, look, this might interest you. This old map says the Golden city ain't too far away from your old stomping grounds. See here?" and he points. "Where'd you get this thing old timer?"

"Won it offn' a moon man in a card fight, way back during the summer when the molasses harvest was too big" he says.

It sounds completely nonsensical to you but Manx seems to take it seriously.

"Kid," he says to you" You've more than earned your keep here, and I reckon I owe you a ride home. This is your big chance. I want to go see about this so called city of Gold, and your village is right on the way. The choice is yours. We can see you safe to your village, all debts settled if that's what you want, or you can stick with my crew for a while longer and help us find this so called golden magical city that still has the internet! Chose carefully though: we may never come this way again. This might be your last chance to get home."
